I've busted our home internet link!!!

I've busted our home internet link!!!

Postby jontera on Thu Dec 10, 2009 10:44 am

or have I?

right this is what I've done.

Had to reset the router, as i've lost the wireless passkey/word thing and the router is no longer near where it can be used wired (re decorated our spare room so the pc is on the landing and the ps3 in the room)...Router is a Netgear DG 834G v3 (few years old)

my ISP is AOL (but don't hold it against me, I know they are a bit poohbear) now when I hover the curser over the icon it shows that connection available, but when I try and log in it fails to connect. Tried using IE and same thing...run diagnostic check and I get DNS failure.

I can/have managed to get to the Netgear site, but there is nothing in the DNS box

Re-installed AOL still no joy

tried following the "fixes" from AOL home site (printed from work) no better

using the CMD prompt thing I can ping Netgear succesfully so there is some communication.

main question is can I repair the DNS problem my self or am I going to have to phone AOL and have a 3hour conversation with them?

(using works pc just to avoid confusion as to how I'm doing this right now, but work won't let me into you-tube, bay of fleas etc)

edit* should mention that I live in the dark ages and the machine runs XP

Does your ISP not offer free technical support for things like this?
I'm with BT and they do. Just a thought

Yeah they do offer support....tried yesterday afternoon for about 3 hours to get through, went to bed with the engaged tone ringing around in my head.

Going to give em another try when i get home later. Would ask the wife to phone them, but she would just be lost at "what's the problem...?" part of the conversation.

It's their job to deal with people like that though so you're better off having her do it :)

log into your router by typing 192.168.0.1 in explorer, then run the setup wizard top left of the page, here are the settings you need to add when promted by the wizard.

Settings:
Connection Protocol: PPPoA (VCMUX or VCBASED)
[Update 2007:- AOL are now recommending PPPoE. But since the BTw backhaul uses PPPoA, unless you are on AOL LLU I'd still recommend PPPoA]
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
(VPI/VCI): 0,38
Authentication: CHAP

The Following settings are set to automatic or get automatically from ISP,
On some routers you may have to leave these fields blank:
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
Domain Name Server (DNS) Addresses

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): 1400
MRU (Maximum Receive Unit): 1400
Update July 2007: - AOL now recommend 1450

Username: your Screenname@aol.com
Password: your password

if you still cant get it to work try using aol's easy installer found here http://help.aol.co.uk/configure-your-ne ... 3109990031 to use this though you will have to hard wire the router,i would hard wire it and use a telephone extension cable temporelary while setting up the router, once its done you can then move the router to where you want, dont forget you will need to go into the wireless settings in the router and setup your wep or wpa key and ssid

Well I've just managed to sort it out.
and would have read your recent posts tommorow at work..Thanks for the help clever techie types.

Right ended up phone AOL got a helpful chap in ireland (extreme shocked icon) and not some one in bungilawi or such place.

helpful up to the point of resetting the parts for the router at Netgear, but no avail thereafter. But he advised me to check all my filters and phone points, and if any aren't making the little internet icon stay on then to bin em and buy new uns. As luck would have it I had a box full that were liberated from somewhere (well I am a plastic scouser & and the wife is a fully fledged Bootle bird) after trying 7 and none of them working, I thought "well whats the chances of this many not working?" so I retried with a different lead.........little flash of life.

ah we are getting somewhere....but after retrying them all again nothing, not even a hint of green light.

but me remembers...one of the vicious Yorkies got herself caught in the lead a while back and dragged the thing across the room, so maybe there is a loose connection in there some where....

out comes the FRONTY tools...take the cover (well base plate) off and yep the phone in socket is a little wobbly. 2 mins with a soldering iron.........and here I am back in the virtual comfort of FOG..

Again thanks to you all who have taken the time to help, Huggy's advise was exactly the same as the chap from AOL.

when you fixed the wiring was there more than 2 wires connected? if so then one will be the bell wire thats no longer used but causes interference and can slow down your adsl,bt sell iplates to filter this wire but its a con,all you need to do is disconnect the wire, check this link http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/bell ... shell.html
