I must say that I had noticed all the signs like that in the pics. Richard actually asked what I was thinking
Can your mate arrange for the BYWAY signs to be added to their lovely little sign trees?
It's one of my complaints in Hampshire is that the BOAT signs or BYWAY signs that they do use are few and far between.. They also usually go for wooden ones which rot and and are difficult to notice amongst trees and stuff (funny that)..

Any signs advertising a right of way are sometimes/usually ripped down by locals or antis so some councils wont waste money putting them up.
But any TOR's or Seasonal TOR's should be advertised at the location, again though these are usually a peice of A4 in a plastic folder and very fradgile to the weather or people ripping them off.

I found the lanes down my neck-of-the-woods simply by driving around

Why not buy an Ordnance Survey map?
There about £7, will show very nearly all the lanes and as an added bonus will indicate the legal status (footpath, bridleway, byway etc).
OK so an OS map isn't a legal document but it is about as acurate as you'll get as they get their RoW info direct from the highway authorities Definitive Map.
Much more efficient than just wandering around hoping to find something interesting (although that can be a fun way to do it too) but not just that, it will help when there's no signs at all (which in many counties is a real problem).
Cheers
Richard
