Re: WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK TODAY!Not the truck, but the caravan. Checked the battery on it (okay, the lights went out) only to find that it was the original (2003) and 2 cells were er shall we say furry? and the rest happily playing along with the drought we are supposedly having atm. I believe The techy term for it is f****d...
Now with another three days of sunny, wind swept hail and rain blasting pikey living to go the boss decided that I needed to go and get another (amazed the word hotel didnt come into the sentence Found another assistant who actually new what we were on about (he' wasent as cute though) and we ended up with a reasonably nice 110AHC brand spanking new leisure battery (up grade from the original 85ahc) it just fitted in the box, cleaned up the post clamps and connected it all up. All now running, ready for the national. This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Re: WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK TODAY!Continued with the turbo swap - cracked on this morning with just the last bar-steward nut to get off - you know the one, top right with a quarter turn once you have sussed how to get a 12mm spanner on it. After trying the top approach without much success, decided to have a go from the bottom. From underneath the car, I was able to get the spanner on and then get a piece of metal tube against the spanner and give the other end of the tube a whack with a hammer. The started it, then thought better to undo the turbo pipe that returns to the sump. Gave a couple of more mm room but still wasn't happy so disconnect the waste gate bar. That helped a bit more. Started to loosen off a tad which gave me a bit more room to attack from the top. That was a bit more comfortable, but still had to use the metal tube and hammer - this seemed to be easier than using a large ring spanner over the shorter 12mm. Took ages to undo and then it all went very tight and alot more persuasion was with the hammer was required. Finally it loosened off. After wrestling off the turbo unit and could see why the nut went tight. Top quarter of the stud was bent and the thread striped off. Not sure what went wrong but I'm thinking the pressure from the loosened exhaust pipe end might have distorted the pull pressure on the final few turns. The newer donor turbo came with the stud attached, so thought no problems; I'll just get the Irwin stud extractor on the furbed stud and remove it. Bar-steward furbed stud snapped off right at the bit where there’s no thread. Still got about 1/4" of the stud showing, but it's obviously welded in there. Next move is to get the exhaust manifold off so I can take it somewhere to get some heat on it and hopefully get the remains out. Got to drill out the remnants out of the Irwin stud extractor first, just in case I need to use it. That fails reckon I'll be trawling the net for a replacement exhaust manifold.
Re: WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK TODAY!12mm RATCHET SPANNER Pete... and I used a pair of stillsons to shift broken studs if there is enough sticking out to get a grip on. If not then drill out carefully and re-thread with a bottom tap. You can get an idea of hole depth using another stud and use a fek orf gert big magnet at the same time to grab the swarf.
