Bring it down ere Rob can sort all the welding for you if needed...

Brake discs can be "machined" back to a nice finish so long as they have enough meat on em...

Brake pipes if just corroded can be undersealed, and sorted for the next test...so long as they are strong and not leaking that is...

Pads, cant do nought with them, could build em up with filler but I dont think it would hold out!

Manifold can be welded, and gasket is an easy fix on a 2.0i

Callipers can be freed up, new pads will get them on a different part of the pistons anyway...

Steering box you have got already, just need fitting bud...

When does your test run out???

Safest plan as far as I can see. Should be able to get the brakes done in a day with parts at hand ... if really pushed steering box as well. The steering box doesn't just need adjusting does it.

Steering box should be quite straight forwards Neil...the one that Rob got of me is complete with all the linkages, idler...the lot...so no breaking nasty joints, just the trackrod ends...just wack the whole lot in complete.
While I remember, it would worth freeing up the trackrods adjusters before you get it on the truck, and free up robs existing ones before removing...
The complete steering system came out of a leafer, which is narrower track, and I aint sure if the track rod lengths are different, or they just adjust out enough...would be worth freeing them both up just in case...
Will make life easier still as you could just wind out the adjusters leaving the outer ball joints in situ, and then check the rod lengths against each other, then fit the steering gear minus the track rods and wind them in afterwards...would be less of a squeeze getting it all in with them removed to.

I would just measure the track before and after ... last time I did it I was 1mm out ;)

As for the steering box I was refering to the existing one. Most often they fail on too much play and garages not knowing how they can be adjusted.

Ok buddy here is a plan I have just drawn up very early in the morning prior to having my first cup of coffee ;)

I am away until the 26th when I drive back from my Dad's in Seaford.

I can attack your brakes and steering on the 27th (possibly running to the 28th depending on how it goes)

I cannot do anything before then as its dark by the time I get home from work and leaving on this Saturday.

This will obviously hamper the potential laning trip Fogman and Fudge are trying to organise, but if we get you on the road again that would be another Fronty saved and we can organise a re-scheduled event a week or so later so we both can go.

What was wrong with your steering box RobFog. Excessive play or just knackered?

Excessive play can be adjusted. Just soak the adjuster nut on the top for a week or so everyday (like you did with your torsion bar bolts) before we have a go.

Re: Just had a Pre MOT ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG

Ok I spoke to RobFog last night. It seems he has a case of warped brakes, a dodgy brake line, and excessive play in the steering box. He is going to have a go at cleaning the lines up as it may just need a sanding down and coat of anti-chip paint. The steering box might need a tweak so he is going to do that. I get back from my Christmas break on the 27th, so he is coming round with the old girl on the 28th to get the brakes overhauled with new pads and disks etc.

I have plenty of oil in the garage and for the sake of an air filter, oil filter, and a good service that might cure the emissions issue.

If I have time I will check out the manifold.

What were the emission levels. High everything or just CO levels? High CO levels could be a case of CAT being tired. High everything could just mean a bloody good service and a redneck tuning session ... read a heavy blat around the A47 ring road.

The rest I will leave to Gregster

This does mean that a FOG spanner party at mine in Norwich is in order on the 28th and all are welcome to join. Tea, biscuits and bacon sandwiches are available to all that help ... that does mean you will have to get your hands dirty Fogman to qualify for munchies ;)

If Hipo is watching this and is willing to bring his welder I might be able to get some 0.9mm steel strips from work and we can do the sills/wheel arch at the same time.
