4X4 Question......?

Hi all,

I have a 2000 2.2TD Fronty special edition and I have a question about the 4WD system. The type fitted is the button on the dash, flashing light and high and low selector lever.

Well actually a couple of questions........

1) Are either of the front and rear diffs limited slip?
2) Is the centre diff locked or free?

I guess what I want to know is can all the drive be potentially lost to one wheel in really slippy conditions, or is the worst I can expect 2WD?

some fronteras are fitted with lsd on the rear but there is no lsd on the front

there is no centre diff on the frontera

There is a chance at LSD, but it was an option, so you would need to check the codes. Most likely it isnt.

There is no center diff, so you always have 2 wheels driven in 4wd. Thats why if you run 4wd in grippy enviroments you can wind the tranny up and do damage.

No centre locking diff and look under your bonnet on the options plate for the G80 and this will tell you if you have LSD, no G80 code no LSD.

Thank you all very much, will have a look for the G80 sticker, I have a sneaky suspicion that at least on LSD is fitted but we will soon see. I guess I could have jacked it up to see but depending on the type of LSD fitted the results may have been inconclusive anyway.

Hi Si, with an open diff the power will go to the wheel with least resistance

Transfer case in the middle on the back of the gearbox. That then has a prop shaft going to the front diff, which in turn has your front drive shafts connected. The geabox has the usual rear wheel drive prop, diff and axles. The rear diff is sometimes LSD, shown by G80 code on VIN plate.

Fogot to add that when you have the hubs locked and in 4wd the drivetrain makes everything turn forwards at the same speed. Hence wind up when going round corners on dry roads. Outside wheels cannot turn faster than inside wheels, therefore torsional stresses placed on axles and diff.

On the B series like yours the drive shafts always spin even when the hubs are unlocked (unlike the A series) you do not get power to the front wheels until you engage 4wd and this then also locks the wheels via a vacuum system.
