hi mate its probably too late to tell you now but if you had posted in the general discussion section you would of had a quick response before the test drive, like you ive never driven a diesel fronty so not much help im affraid other than rusty side steps are the norm but better sets can often be found for sale in the parts for sale section or on ebay.
re your insurance claim you should of stuck with it mate , my girlfriends youngest had his clio hit on jan 2nd this year, the other driver accepted the blame,the car was recovered within 2 weeks of the accident after the engineer had inspected it, the ins co wrote it off to the tune of £800 with a buy back of £250 but he decided to take the full amount, but he only actually recieved the settlement cheque 2 weeks ago , oh and his ins co was also swiftcover, they soon passed his claim over to another of their companies called helphire [ or something similiar] who seemed to fob him off with " ring again in 2 weeks " everytime he rang to check on progress, during the whole affair several times he threatened to say sod it & give up on it but his mother & i badgered him not to let them get away with it & luckilly he stayed the course & got his money in the end

Turned out to be a whole lot more rough than expected.

The clincher was when we had a quiet word with the mechanic at the garage before the sales guy said hello. When he starts the conversation with "What can I say that won't drop me in in? I wouldn't buy it..." it's a sure sign

So we're back looking around again, might get a Frontera yet but might be some other 4x4.
