Hi every1 i am after some advise on the 2.5 tds 1998 lwb i am considering what are they like too run and also what should i look out for thanx

well first of all wecome to the group and as for the 2.5 i loved mie and regret getting rid of it but the only problem i had was my number 1 injector but apart from that i loved mine

The 2.5 is a reliable motor. It shares running gear (Brakes, steering, drivetrain etc) with other models of a similar year.

Engine wise the only 3 things to watch out for are the number 1 injector with built in sensor, the viscous fan coupling and turbo gaskets.

Gaskets are easily available and inexpensive.
No 1 injector can be relatively expensive, around £200 if I remember correctly.
Viscous fan clutch is no longer available from VX but a readily available alternative has been sourced quite cheaply.

Welcome to FOG mate.
The 2.5 is a great model, the thing that is different from all the others is everything is controled by the ECU. Even the throttle, so no cables.
Where in Scotland are you mate? as there a few members already with the 2.5 who attend our meets.

It sounds like it is a good model what are they like on mpg for long runs as i do over 400 miles a week, thanx tony.

Hi Tony, if you get a good one that has been looked after and regularly serviced, you should get in the mid 30s.
I get a good return with mine, but it is well looked after.
Change the oil and filter and the fuel filter every 5000 miles and keep the other levels checked, and the propshaft greased, and you should be fine.
Check for a good service history on the proposed purchase when you go to see it.
Under the bonnet, check how clean and tidy it is and see if there is any side to side play in the fan hub. If there is play, it is on its way out. Dont worry though as we have found a source for a replacement part at a reasonable price.
Also check for play in the steering at the steering wheel, this is common to all models, and is easily adjusted by the adjuster on the top of the steering box.
When you road test it, listen for front wheel bearing hums. Also rattles from the engine bay. These are usually caused by worn idler bearings. Another job easily sorted.
Anything else you want to know, just ask mate.

Welcome to FOG M8... I have 2.5 tds and it costs me £80 odd to fill mine n i get 400mls to the full tank.
