Hi all - new to the forum. Thinking of getting a 1998 2.2 LWB fronty. Any hints or tips and things to look out for - people can give me on this model would be welcomed. Also looking at putting some A/T tires on it as I mountain bike alot and some places get right muddy ( not M/T tyre worthy thou ) , on 16' wheels whats the best size tyre to go for - looking for good clearence but not looking to get a lift kit or anything.

Good luck on the hunt for a 2.2, theres a few out there. My only advice is to keep looking, its a lot easier to walk away from a 'dubious' one than it is to fix it. There are honest ones out there - and a few 'less than honest ones'..

Fronties can be a labour of love.. but worth it!

I Bought "Martha" back in October after a search for "cheap 4x4" on flea bay for a weekend toy / gun bus... She has skinned my knuckles, brought me to tears of frustration, emptied my wallet and broadened my vocabulary & toolbox - and I havnt looked back. Fronty vs Landy - Fronty every time.

Evil plans are afoot for the engine / gearbox / drive train - I smell a winter project coming up

2.2's can be a pain but also good fun - when buying, look for the usual things like a good service history, any leaks, lots of smoke, does it sound rough, timing belt changed etc.

5 door versions also tend to have corrosion problems at the bottom of the rear doors - so might be worth checking.

As long it's been looked after and had regular services/oil changes you can't go far wrong.

Most parts can be bought cheap via Internet or local Car Suppliers and there is also lots of help on the Forum.

With regards to your tyre question - 245/75/16 should be fine otherwise you can also try getting some 31x10.5x15's - it all depends a bit on how much you like to spend.

The one for you is out there..just haven't got a clue where, but it exists.....and your gonna love it, hate it, swear at it and smile, then your going to threaten to scrap it, fix it and once you've finished you'll be obsessed with it and wonder why people buy green ovals.

They are a lot of fun..then you add FOG meets etc and then the madness starts to set in.
