Keyboard remapping?

Keyboard remapping?

Postby Sir-Doris on Tue Feb 16, 2010 8:20 pm

Does anyone know how to remap keys on a keyboard?

I had to replace the keyboard on my laptop a couple of years ago. Unfortunately without going to sony and paying an extortionate fee the only keyboard I could get was an American one. Hence no £ on the keyboard.

Does anyone know if its possible to remap that particular key combination so a pound sign pops up? SHIFT + 4 = $

Iv created a macro before now but its not always willing to play ball depending on the application thats open and various software keyboards remapping programs are waaayyyy too complicated.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

Sir Doris

Go to the start menu, select Control Panel, search for keyboard and select, then select the hardware tab at the top, now select properties bottom right, select English UK.

Hope this is of some help

Sorry about that but I have some time on my hands so I entered the question into the help menu and got:

Change the keyboard layout to azerty
In the AZERTY keyboard layout, the keys A and Z are swapped with the keys Q and W of the standard English keyboard layout, known as QWERTY.
Click to open Regional and Language Options.
Click the Keyboards and Languages tab, and then click Change keyboards.
Under Installed services, click Add.
Double-click a language that includes (France), (Belgium), or (Luxembourg) as part of the language's name.
Under Keyboard, select an AZERTY keyboard layout. To see a preview of the keyboard layout, click Preview.
Click OK.

Or if you really wanna go to town, get the patch that allows you to use the Dvorak layout
It bears no relation at all to the standard keyboard layout, but I rather like it, heh. Plus nobody's gonnae use your pc, as they'll get no sense when they try typing anything.

shift + 4 = $ on the UK keyboard too. You want shift + 3 for £. You can use the UK keymap settings using the windoze destructions described above, and if you still have the old keyboard you may be able to swap the keycaps over so you are back at a UK layout (although laptop keycaps can be a bit tricky to swap)

Unfortunately the keyboard layout is different with different sized keys.

Tried the UK keyboard set-up, first thing I tried but then a whole heap of other characters are in different places. Im not that fussed really but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.

Many moons ago with windows 3.11 you could remap individual keys and reassign the SHIFT + (INSERT KEY HERE) in the keyboard properties. I know this because my first laptop had a US keyboard because I bought it in Malaysia.

Reason I was to change SHIFT + 4 setup is that US keyboards have a different symbol on SHIFT + 3. I want to remap key 4 so it displays the £ symbol instead of $.
