Disk De-Fragmenter.

Disk De-Fragmenter.

Postby FUDDY MUCKER on Thu Dec 17, 2009 11:50 am

Right techy boffins !!!! Just a quicky for you.

I've just started my fortnightly computer clean up, getting rid of spy ware, anti virus, unused files etc.

I've used the "Performace and Maintainence" Screen to run Disk Clean up, no problems.

Then I come to use "Disk DeFragmenter" and strange things happen.

I open it up and try to analyse the C: disk and get this message ..........

"Disk Defragmenter Has detected that Chkdsk is sheduled to run on the volume (C:). Please Run Chkdsk/f."

And wont defragment my hard drive.

I've typed Chkdsk/f into the "Run" program an nothing happens. Type it again, missing off the F and it checks the disc in "Read Only" mode.

Im currently running, Kaspersky Internet Security, all fully updated and running correctly, and Adware SE spyware, again all updated and running currectly.

I've checked the "Sheduled Tasks" in the Performance and Mantainance section, nothing is showing up.

My internet browser is Mozilla, again fully update. operating system is Windows XP Service Pack 3, fully updated.

Just to give an idea, the past few days the computer has been running very slow, with the pages freezing or slowly scrolling down from the top to the bottom, hence why I decided to clean the computer up.

Any idea's would be helpful. I'm not computer illiterate and know my way around, but this one I can't understand.

Cheers folk.

Step 1 Run Windows XP normally, allowing it to load fully.

Step 2 Access the "My Computer" menu. You can do this by clicking the Start menu and clicking the "My Computer" menu option. You can also double-click the "My Computer" icon if you've enabled it on your desktop.

Step 3 Right-click on the drive on which you wish to run the Chkdsk F command.

Step 4 Click "Properties" in the right-click context menu.

Step 5 Click on the "Tools" tab in the Properties window.

Step 6 Click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error-checking" frame of the Tools tab.

Step 7 Click in the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box under the "Check disk options" frame in the following window. This is the step which enables the "/f" command in Chkdsk.

Step 8 Click "Start" to begin the Chkdsk scan. If there are a lot of processes running in the background, or if Chkdsk determines that it should be run when you next restart your computer, it will suggest it. It is always advisable to run the Chkdsk from the restart in this case.

Step 9 Set your system to safe mode with the "/SAFEBOOT" command from the MSCONFIG program. Click "Start" and "Run." Type "MSCONFIG" and enable the "/SAFEBOOT" option from the BOOT.INI tab if your anti-virus or anti-spyware software is conflicting with the Chkdsk process.

Let me know how you get on.
Failing that have a look at this video http://www.ehow.com/video_4872358_run-c ... ws-xp.html
Actually. Watch the video first. Should sort it for you

Perfect Disk or Diskeeper depending on PC's intended use.

Diskeeper is very much fit and forget. Automatically defrags drives in the background, uses minimal resources. Use this on the laptop.

Perfect disk has similar fit and forget background defragging but is a bit more disk intensive as it aims to get as large a block of free space as possible. Again uses very few resources.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

Also worth mentioning - if your hard drive(s) are running on NTFS a defragmenting brings little difference to the operation or 'speed' of the PC as NTFS 'sorts' data (bits) by default.

Don't tell me... you run OS/2 Warp as well???
Actually, serious one here, I've actually got the genuine install media and manuals for BeOS 5 at home. Used to be on my old tower as one of the multi-boot options.

Hey Fudster!

Try using System Mechanic 9 from iolo.com

It does the lot including the registry! ( without screwing it up! )

Half of the problems with slow computers are down to cr*p in the registry anyway!

Clear out the rubbish from the registry and you should see a distinct improvement!

Failing that, try MagicDefrag from Ashampoo! You can get this for FREE!
