Is there anything else you want from the phone functionality wise?

I've been through quite a few and have a few on the go (work and personal and 'crap') and they all have their merits :)

most the time all i use my phone for is calls and texts the odd photo but i quite like the idea of the maps on it as i few here have said that they have used them for laning so i am thinking along them lines.

Depends on what "maps" you want ... iPhone can have google maps or Tomtom, but I don't think you can get MemoryMap on there. Personally I would go with a HTC phone - and if you want to run Memory Map then something like the HTC Touch Diamond (which you should be able to get on eBay fairly cheaply). If you just want mapping in general, then any phone that runs Google Android as it's operating system will happily integrate with Google maps - just watch out for the data charges!

I have the Android G1 and it's awesome however the camera is dreadful but the newer version has a 5MP one. Now i''ve had this phone and all the extra apps I could never have a 'normal' phone again.

For laning you cant go wrong with a windows mobile based smartphone. Will run tomtom and memory map at the same time.

Ideally the bigger the screen the better.

Must admit I'm a fan of HTC Smartphones, currently have a Touch HD (aka Blackstone) and before that had a TyTnII (aka Kaiser).

Have run TomTom and Memory Map on both using the builtin GPS reciever with no problems

Only had the Touch HD for a month, nearly went for the Touch Diamond 2, took me a month to make my mind up and while the Touch HD is a slightly older model it has a bigger screen which swung it in the end

My Lada driving laning buddy has a Samsung Omnia Windows Smartphone, MM works a treat but so far he has failed to get TT working with its builtin GPS
