I use Zonealarm as my Firewall and Activesync doesn't turn that off.
Which Firewall program are you using Dave?

Microshafts own, nothing special and adequate.

You can go back into the security centre and switch it back on... just wondering why it switches off.

The windows Firewall is Kurap.....turn it off and try one of the free third part ones.
The only time i've ever had an issue with activesync not connecting was when i mistakenly didn't give Zonealarm permission to grant it access.

Which version of Windows are you both using?

I'm using XP Pro and Win7.

I have tried tp firewalls before, didn't think too much of them to be honest. Zone alarm over complicates matters, especially as i have several network connections, 2 servers and 3 VPNs.

Yer so why do you only update it here

Funny it recognises yours (my old pda) but ignores mine unless I turn the firewall off

Bit like bolting the door after the horse has bolted and all ...

Activesync is renowned not to work well with firewalls, as it effectively creates a network port when you plug in the device, and needs access to a high port for transferring data. In an attempt to have a "work around" for the firewall problem, microshaft decided to put a cheap hack in to disable the windoze firewall when it's attached. It doesn't actually lose much protection, as it then limits the normal connection (to allow passthrough from the mobile device to the internet), effectively setting up it's own nat network, and in such creating a split target for any hack attempt.

That said - personal firewalls are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard on the whole. They give the general public a sense of security with blinking lights and occasional "boings", but they will never replace good network design and secure methodologies ... ;)
