I'm sure someone will be along to tell you what the names of the leads are, and what the purpose for the different connectors are.

Last time i looked, you could buy adapters in Maplins or most electronic stores.

You may be better off getting a new graphics card for it? Is it new or just new to him?

Interesting...
Not sure any of the ports you've photographed are monitor related...

Bottom photo is a normal VGA monitor connector, no surprises there. Middle picture shows a parallel printer port in pink, 3 USB ports, and the one in green is probably for tape drives (not 100% on this, but it's definitely nothing to do with a monitor) Top photo, the gold expansion card is soundcard, and the single port above it doesn't resemble a DVI port either, as the pin arrangement is wrong.

Do you still have the Dell monitor about to use as a reference - compare the cable on it to the new monitor? Or are there any other ports on the back of the pc which you might not have shown in the photos?

The IOIO is a comms port I believe dave. The monitor will not work if plugged in there. A new graphics card would be the way I would go..

That looks like the wifes Dell, as I remember there is an adapter between the moniter lead and the interface on the pc. I'll have a look when i get home and take a piccy of it..

just off-topic slightly....

this little adapter part, which screws into the pc, was the only thing that stopped the pc getting nicked when we got burgled a few years back. That and a nextdoor knocked wondering what the noise was all about.

the adapter thing...

the blue end comes from the monitor, but the other end has a different fitting than your dads pc. (ours has a slot at one end rather than a pin) but I imagine that a computer place would have them for all types of interface.

I think you'll find that it is a DVI port, just a non-standard one, as in my experience, you should be able to get an adaptor that would let you run two monitors off the one card.

Just be thankful it's that and not a display port ... they're a right pain!

As alchamist said the top port is a DVI port. Adapters available from the graphics card manufacturer or maplins, pc world etc.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

that is an oddball connection, this is typical of dell systems, the socket is called DMS 59-pin,if you search ebay you will find a dms 59- pin to vga or dual vga converter, here is one that will convert the dms 59 to vga or dvi
