Ha, now this is a new one for me...

cures noisey fans and prevents sudden shut downs

I bought a cheapy laptop from a friend of mine that was cutting out (power shuts off) without warning. which is a pain in the when you are half way through a poker game

right cheap remedy for this way..getting the strongest hoover i could find, cleaning the filter and placing the hose under the fan housing (lappy turned off) turn on hoover and hold. the ammount of dust that was in the fan housing was amazing. then placed hooover where air comes out of lappy done same.

result Lappy hasn't turned it's self off since.

so I done the house PC (not a copper that hides in the house, the home computer that SWMBO uses)
one of the vent things on the front had that much dust in it, it looked like a carpet.

result quieter fans and I'm sure it's a bit faster.

Now I imagine that taking the thing apart would clean it better, but i'm thinking if I did this on a regular basis then the problem would never have happened in the first place.

(right I'm pleased with myself but I'm sure that someone will rain on my parade. telling me I'll knacker the computer thingy ma jigs cleaning my machine this way)

I done it to the PS3 as well, that sucks dust like no business aswell.

taking apart and using compressed air cans is proberly best, but I know if i take it apart I'll end up with screws left over and break/shorting something inside

A tip for laptops, dont sit them directly on your lap

You will block the cooling vents and it will overheat, sit them on a tray, big book or something so air can circulate under them to cool it, then sit the tray or whatever on your lap

i run 4 fans on my main pctwo in and two out, the temp reads about 24c

a bit off topic but i herd having a lap top directly on your lap can damage your err little soldiers and your little eggs if your a ladyis this true

Yes it can damage them - but as Ste said, due to the heat. I have actually ended up with sub-q burns on my legs before ... couldn't work out why part of my leg went funny colours until I realised that was where the heatsink on the laptop was!

Technically, you should use compressed air to remove dust rather than a vacuum cleaner (does a better job too), however if it works for you, then it works

And I have seen in the past, a PC using 50% of it's CPU doing nothing just due to the dust on the heatsink and fans. And with 3 servers and a couple of MythTV boxes at home that run 24/7, it's a constant battle for me. I try and make sure I take one offline every month or so and give it a good blast out, plus a bit of silicone lube around the fan bearings.
