My dearly beloved has become a student again. Learning to be a teacher So being the devout hubby I got her a lil Elonex lappy for uni. Its Linux based, ho hdd, its solid state think its 2gig. Has several usb ports. I'm wondering 2 things.... 1) for uni etc, how easy is open office to live and will it converse with MS? and will a USB drive help here? 2) Can I get MM and a usb GPS to talk through Linux? well she wont be at uni at the weekends will she

Open Office is pretty good, if its just Microsoft Word files it needs to deal with it should be fine. It might have minor compatibility issues with the latest Office version but shouldn't be a show stopper as they usually catch up quite quick. We did a pilot in work with Open Office and the only show stopper for us was the huge number of 3rd party apps that 'need' MS Office and its VBA support which is missing in Open Office but this is not something you need to worry about for general 'Office' tasks. alex wrote:2) Can I get MM and a usb GPS to talk through Linux? well she wont be at uni at the weekends will she
Er, Computer say No MM doesn't work on Linux, GPS might, lots of Linux forums out there that help on this stuff so worthwhile searching these for compatible GPS devices

Open office - no problems for the work she'll be doing
Yes, MM will run on Linux, but not straight install as per windows, and I don't think the netbook will have Wine (windows emulator) on it.

Was gonna mention Wine but wasn't sure if you could squeeze it on the drive

The Mrs loves it.
It wont run too much, the website warns that its not got a strong vid card. If your gonna buy one go to a computer fair, wouldnt pay £100 for one. Ideal for the Mrs as she can use it to type notes up and it is truely portable, unlike most lappies these days.
Phil, she does have an sd slot, so I'm going to shove a big card in.
