Any tecky folk out there ???

Postby marcsony on Fri Jun 05, 2009 5:17 pm

Hey guys, so i got to messing around with an old desktop pc i used to have, a mate of mine needed one so i told him if he paid for the bits i would give it him as i dont mind a bit of a play.
so all was going well i replaced the harddrive, repaced the fan, and ram board, reinstalled windows xp, reinstalled all the drivers for eveything.
when i was done it fired up like a brand new pc everything was spot on.
so i gave it to him and told him when he got his internet sorted to update it via the update service.
I get a call a week later o dear its all gone wrong so i popped around and it seems that when he has updated it the screen has now gone funny, it looks like your looking at it with 3d specs in and icons and menu bar have enlarged.
im guessing the update has done something with the driver for the video.
Any ideas as how to fix, Ok so the things ive tried are,
updating the driver for the video,
rolling back the driver
if i restore the system to before the sp2 update it works fine, Its a emachines 2200
anyone out there with a clue please show me the way cheers. :? :?

Turn off auto update in windows settings.
Roll the machine back to SP2, then go to windows update and choose manual update rather than express.
This will show all the updates available for the machine.
Identify the driver update for the monitor (should be a hardware update) and deselect it.
You should be able to install all the other updates and SP3, without updating the monitor drivers, then make sure that any future updates are done manually.

Ok - when it installs SP2, it might well reset the display settings - and it sounds like it's using a video mode outside of the range of the monitor. Try seeing if you can change the resolution first before rolling back to pre-SP2 ... you really really don't want to be on the net without it ...

Of course, you could always ditch Microshaft all together and go with a real operating system ...
