Compaq & Hewett Packard "Code Purple".

Compaq & Hewett Packard "Code Purple".

Postby leee7196 on Thu May 21, 2009 10:46 pm

Hi guys,i thought i would post this as a warning and a fix to the "Code purple" pc error.this happens with Compaq and HP machines,
we have had trouble with our pc unexpentantly no mods or any thing changed, but for some reason our pc wouldn't fire up past the XP loading screen. after numerous calls to pc world,HP and tech guys plus local pc repairers,we had no joy in finding out what was wrong,we couldn't simply restore the OS, as our OS is on the hard drive which we couldn't access.
the problem is with what is called a "tattoo" this is installed at the factory, and what it does is checks the motherboard and hard drive to the system,if the check doesn't tally, then it puts the loading screen into a loop,(what it is supposed to is deter people from adding upgrades).
you can have restore disks tracked down and sent to you but at a cost.
Hp and Compaq were taken to court in USA, over the Tatooing and were told to send customers recovery discs free of charge, but it doesn't apply to the UK.

The fix for XP.
this is simple and disables the tattoo check.use this only if you have NO restore discs.

1) turn on pc and press F10 repeatedly (pause for a second between key press) until the recovery screen appears.

2) press R for the recover console

3) press Alt + D together to bring up the command prompt

4) on the line C:\minit\system32> prompt type, del h:\hp\bin\configcheck then press Enter .

5) at the "are you sure?" prompt, type Y and press Enter.

6) at the prompt type EXIT and press Enter.

7) press Alt + Q together. your PC will now reboot without the Code Purple.

all be it,all our data is lost, and it has reverted back to when we first bought the pc ,so there will be lots of updates to do,but at least we have the pc working again, and trouble free.
it's worked for us a treat, and hopefuly may help other members, who have the same trouble.

it certainly helped us,we were looking at a dead PC,and customer support was all about charging us £40-50 for the privilage of sending recovery disks to us,UNTIL that is,i came across this website:

http://www.billoblog.com/?p=152clicky

T's full of solutions for all PC users and LAPPY'S it also shows how to cure Vista too, from the compaq HP (also Acer,Apple,to name a few) booby trap.

The more people know about this, the better,as some of the PC tech shops in our area, have never heard of this "CODE PURPLE" error.

A big shout out to billoblog for solving this error.
