For the power, you can use something like this - no need for an inverter and loads of unnecessary wiring etc
You can get the mobile mounts for using the laptop on the dash area ... or ...
The other way to go is to use the laptop just as a base station, and connect up a secondary screen etc. Either with something like this which would negate the need for a keyboard on the whole, or just a normal screen and mini USB keyboard.
As you can see - i've been playing with the idea for a while, however i've decided that i'm going down the route of something like this and tie it into the whole entertainment system. I already have the software ready to go

For what its worth, I run a tablet PC and memory map in my truck.
The tablet is on a mount I got from ebay, this one Suctioned to the windscreen & screwed to the dash. Been through some pretty roughg stuff so far with no ill effects.
The GPS is a wee bluetooth one, with an external antenna. The Maplins power supply is in the glove box with the GPS, and it powers the GPS & the tablet. Tiny Bluetooth USB adaptor on the tablet, and there you go.
Hope that helps?
Cheers Jools
