Hi to everyone, I was looking for a suitable vehicle to carry all my fishing gear and passenger, after reading lots of reports about problems with freelanders and bad reports on the suzukis I was looking for I didn't know which way to turn as it seemed every vehicle I looked at including the frontera had a bad reputation, it seems all people want to do is moan about their issues and not too many want to give constructive critisism. Anyway I took the plunge and I've just picked up a late 1999 Vreg 2.2 RS SWB for £1400.00 with a full service history and recent full service including cam belt change and 85000 on the clock, it seemed a reasonable price even though the exhaust was blowing, I checked the service manual and the mobile mechanics name and number was in there so I gave hime a call, he told me that one of the bolts connecting the front end of the exhaust to the manifold had corroded and snapped when he tried to tighten it and didn't have a powerful enough drill to remove the old one, at the time and said it was an easy enough job but you needed an air powered drill to do the job, so he filled the gap with paste as a temporary measure. Other than that the previous lady who was the only owner had spent far more than the money than I was about to pay for it in keeping it in good condition and sounded a good deal. The only other bad points were two barely legal front tyres which I shall replace with some part worns for the time being, and it would seem the obligatory dodgy instrument panel which only works when the lights are switched on.
I made my purchase and drove from High Wycombe to plymouth with no problems, no racing car but thats not what it was made for, everything felt tight and responsive with no rattles and bumps - 200 plus miles on just over half a tank, might get better when the exhaust is sorted.
Glad to have found this site and make contact with like minded people anyone, with any tips or advice it would be great to hear from you. I need some side steps as the wife is a little short unable to climb in easily, any advice on fitting and compatability between a series and b series fronteras would be welcomed.
