Whining noise

Hi,
I have a 2000 ( w plate ) 3.2 auto and when I engage drive or any other gear I can hear a slight whining noise but I cannot pinpoint exactly where. any thoughts.

No I haven't. I assume there is a way to check the autobox oil level....

Thank you very much for that comprehensive reply. I will investigate all that you mention and report back for anyone else who may encounter a similar problem in the future. Sorry to mention the comments but I had assumed that until new members had become more familiar with the experts online that these sorts of comments would be withheld.

do you know where I can get a replacement exhaust system from?
3.2 V6 24v Frontera. I'm told I have to order direct from Vauxhall and that the back box is over £200.00 I cann't imagine how much the full system would cost.

might be cheaper to get one made ...
however someone with a better understanding of the 3.2 V6 will be along soon to better advise you
