Greenlaning for beginners Simply 4x4

Postby brachunky on Thu Oct 25, 2007 10:45 pm

As I am a complete 4x4 novice and believe in a slowly/gently approach  , I came across a website called Simply 4x4 who do basic intros. What appeals to me is that they do a few days out in Derbyshire. Looking thru their guestbook I see that Lord Trugga did it back in 2004 :D Whats your opinion Lawrence? Worth it?

Back in 2004, yes it was well worth it.

I did three trips out with Keith and Hayden at about £25 a time - very good full days out.

Nowdays though, Hayden has moved on leaving just Keith to lead and in order to cover his costs (or whatever other reason), he occasionally runs (in my oppinion) too big a group.

Having had my days out with Keith (group size of between 4 and 6 vehicles), I was inspired to do a little more research, that found me joining GLASS. Having been a member for 3 years and experiencing the turmoil that was the NERCA, I will not partake in laning that sees a group size of more than four vehicles - as per the GLASS voluntary code of conduct.

In one way I would say yes, you'll have a great day out, but I would take time to consider the negative impact a large convoy of 4x4 has for our pastime. Perhaps, give him a call and discuss your concerns (if you concur with mine)

Thanks for your comments Trugs! I will phone the chap in a few weeks, depending on how work on the fronty progresses, and ask the question about numbers. Im all for a laugh and dont mind getting chucked in at the deep end,so to speak but on this occassion, i feel starting off on the bottom rung will be more beneficial in confidence building hence the appeal of the simply 4x4 idea.

Thanks Dave.

I think I'll have to put my "leading" on hold until the BBB's new engine has been run in - maybe in the new year.

Cheers Dave :D

I saw and spoke to Kieth from Simply 4x4 a couple of weeks ago in Corwen while laning with CRAG, I have to say I was a bit shocked to see him leading a group of ten cars  I questioned him and he said the other guy he uses to lead didnt always turn up :? .

brachunky save your £25 or what ever they charge and get out with us for free.
I will be getting more free time soon and you will be more than welcome to come along on any trips Im involved with.

Unfortunally the next one in a couple of weeks is full, but keep your eyes open, there are usually a few trips being organised.

Get the landranger map, BOATs are marked as "+++++" but still check with local Byways Officer to make sure map is uptodate and that there are no seasonal restrictions in place. another place to look is Wayfinder.

Hope this helps

Just remember though, I stupidly went out on my own and nearly come unstuck or should i say stuck. Read the laning tips on the forum and then get on one of Drift's or Trugga's trips first cos they'll show you how to drive a lane properly.

In the peak there are also plenty ORPA the specific rights of way on these is not shown on an OS map Top advice, check with the local ROW officer.

A good site to do an initial search is http://www.way-finder.co.uk/
If in doubt don’t drive it!
