Hi there, I’m new to frontera an obviously the frontera owners club…… to be honest its not been a great introduction to the frontera world!
I bought a 1999 2.2 limited, LWB petrol
I bought it to launch my boat across the beach, low and behold I press the 4x4 button (on rough ground) and it just flashes and flashes and flashes, it will not engage! Found that this could be the vacuum hose, not the end of the world!
BUT
Yesterday I was happily driving about when there was a really nasty smell of rotten eggs! On inspection the battery was leaking vapour at an alarming rate! Luckily I was not far from home so I got back disconnected the battery and removed it, boy was it hot! …. I think it could be the alternator over charging it?
So im planning on getting a new alternator and battery today,
Is changing the alternator a DIY job or garage?
Any (constructive) opinion is really welcome, am I barking up the wrong tree!?

Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately problems like this can happen with any vehicle, it’s not model specific.
This could be an alternator problem as you say, and or a faulty battery.
It’s a fairly easy to change.
Also check the condition of the Pos leads to the battery, maybe you have a short, in any case you will need to check them just in case they have overheated.
Do you have means to check the alternators output voltage and current before you buy another?

hi there, nope not got the means to test my current alternator, but the battery did get so hot it appears to have caused damage to the alterantor, its brown scorched on the outside so the inside must be pretty dead!
as is the battery holder!
will check the + lead next and check all the earthing cables!
thanks for you advice, much appreciated!
