The issue you described, to me sounds like either a warn wheel bearing that needs tightening or replacing or possibly a warn steering/suspension component (ball joints or track rod end)
Grab a wheel at the top and push/pull it to see if you can feel any play. Then do the same holding the front and back and try to steer the wheel each way.
Any knocking should become apparent.
To diagnose further, get a mate to (carefully) grasp each suspension component in turn as you carry out the above tests - they should "feel" which part is knocking.
