loss of power: can somebody help me ??? (2,8D isuzu 12/96)

Postby budbaroud on Fri Jan 26, 2018 9:50 pm

hi folks,
came home last night after a nice ride with my 400.000km Frontera.
No noise, no smell, no vibrations, everything fine, so parked it for the night.
Starting up was also normal this morning but could not drive it, it didn't riv higher than 1600-1700 rpm.
Trying to get it a bit higher makes it stalling.
Seems to me that there's a bit more black smoke than before.
Had to take another car to go for the day.
Does somebody have any idea what's happening???

Sorry for my poor english, i'm from Belgium.

Thanks already for any suggestion,

Budbaroud.

These engines generally don't go wrong

When was the last time the fuel & air filter were changed?

As for your English, it's a lot better than I hear from a lot of English youngsters

hi and thanks for your reply!!

the car is serviced every 10-12000km, what i'm doing myself, and there's still quit no oil consumption.
i've already checked the air filter today, clean.
but as i wrote, it drove as a train yesterday and all the days before....
great mystery to me.

I'd be checking the air filter and changing the fuel filter and then bleeding the system thru, trying a start and all should be well.

In my experience with the 2.8 a typical symptom with a restricted fuel filter is truck run okay, gets a reasonably rapid loss of power over a few miles then stops. Left to recover for a few mins the filter refills due to a vacuum you can then re-start and the process repeats.

Might also be worth checking the fuel delivery pipeline for corrosion paying particular attention where it goes through the section at the rear of the truck to much and the air gets in.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Good morning,

Thanks for all these replies « so late » at night....
I will check the fuel filter again today (car is in Deerlijk, at 75km off from here), and maybe try with a straight fuel line if necessary.
For the Belgian replyer, I’m spending the half of my time in st-Niklaas.
What town are you from?

Have a nice day!
Will post later on how it went.

Hi,

Problem cured!!
I’ve drained the fuel filter, no water, no mud, just clean diesel.
Pumped it back up to have a nice pressure, started up, and, o wonder, problem gone!
I still and even more don’t understand..... :?:
However, thanks for your support and tips!

Keep in touch,

Bud. :shifty:

Replace the filter element otherwise the problem is going to come back.

Well then, is the truck up and running properly again?

In respect to the filter, it's not so much getting muddy, wet or otherwise dirty fuel out of it when draining. It's more like the filter element is either blocked or extremely restricted by all the muck it has filtered out of the fuel over the years and is no longer able to let enough through for the engine.

The engine then dies through fuel starvation and stops. Meantime while the engine is stopped the vacuum that has now built up between the filter and the hp pump will slowly pull fuel into the filter and refill it thus allowing the engine to re-start and the process simply repeats.

Not so bad Pete thanks, still in the same place and still got the two 2.8's. Truck has been sat in the naughty corner of the yard for close to 7 months having punched a couple of big end bolts through the sump. I've now finally got round to swapping the engine, just need to bleed the fuel through in the morning and it will be going again....

This one is no 4 for this truck now and the third one I've put in it, I've had so much practice I don't need the manual now lol
