Collected the Trooper 3.1 engine from Watford on Sat
Came complete with alternator, starter and solid flywheel (more goodies to add to my spares stash) plus it is fitted with the Trooper 2.8 inlet manifold
There are a number of minor differences between the 2.8 in the Frontera and the Trooper 3.1
Sump pan is deeper, engine holds nearly a litre more oil
No sound insulation on the block or rocker cover
Oil pressure light and oil pressure gauge have separate sensors
One of the water sensors in the thermostat housing has 2 pins compared to the Frontera with 1 pin
Rocker cover has an extra pipe low down at the back corner which drains into the dipstick tube
The 3.1 does not have a thermostat at the rear of the block where the pipes go to the oil cooler
There is a gizmo on the side of the injection pump that is plumbed into the cooling system, guessing it is some kinda cold start/fast idle jobbie
Yesterday I made a start on building the engine up ready to install, fitted turbo, alternator, exhaust manifold with EGT adaptor but it was slow going as I have buggered my thumb and using it was really painful, then I failed to get the spigot bearing out so gave up
Back on it today and while it still hurts it was defo bettter and made some good progress.
Finished swapping bits off my 2.8 lump, bought a 16mm Rawl Bolt to extract the spigot bearing and the engine is in and bolted up, only jobs left are
Gearbox wiring
Replace clutch slave gaiter
Make and fit a blanking plate for the exhaust manifold EGR hole
Clean radiator as its fins are choked with mud and refit
Make and fit a blanking plate on the inlet manifold
Make a gasket for the thermostat housing and fit
Back in work in the morning so hoping to finish it off tomorrow night
