Thought I would test out the garage today so I replaced the drivers side outer CV boot (I made sure to tighten all the bolts properly this time ;-) ) and started to drop the tank to replace the tank straps. Thats when it all went pear shaped.

While the tank was down I thought I would clean up the tank guard and knock the dent out, so I judiciously started tapping away with a hammer and chisel to knock some of the loose rust off and imagine the look on my face when the chisel went through the tank guard and out the other side

The frantic search was on, I may have found one in south Wales, luckily Im going there tomorrow anyway but wont know until the morning when they are open. Fingers crossed.

I also may have found a pair of those 5.13:1 diffs Iv been looking for.

A pic of the truck in the garage, see... plenty of space for me to make it taller ;-)

with reference to your diff ratios, did you get the diffs from a fronty or are they special, my reson for asking is when up the wayfarer last week i got stuck tring to get up a 18" step, i was in 4 low and the clutch was all the way up and i had no drive against the obstacle coz i guess the gearbox was over geared to drive the 32" tyres, is there a fronty with low diff ratios as std that i can get out of a scrapper?

no, i have trooper axles
you shouldnt have a prob on the wayfarer, i ran 33`s on 4,30 ratio for a long time, i reckon on clutch being hot and slipping, try not to ride the clutch it is a common mistake when off roading, i know i used to do it myself, my view any way

this was a one off, after all the ice a section of the railway slabs has become worn and theres a large step to get onto the slabs now. i tryed to get up it head on and didnt have the power to get the wheels to spin and grip a disco and mikes rangie got up it no probs as they attacked it at a slight side angle. just thought that i mite be able to swap diff inserts from an other fronty that has lower gearing. with the toyota surf i have there is loads of different diff options available from model to model ie manual/auto/lsd and so on

try not to ride the clutch it is a common mistake when off roading,

Bingo, that is a good bit of advise and I defy anyone who say they havent done it, its like braking in 1st low down hill we all did it, until we gained confidence in our current motors.

As said if you cant surmount an obstical one way try another, and a worth while note is lookl at what tyre pressures your running, to high on the obstical that was mentioned you will wheel spin no end, lower pressure you have a bigger foot print = more grip  , not good on road but when off road that is uneven it equates to better grip.

agree i had to much pressure in the tyres and the clutch had had some abuse previous to the obstacle, changeing my approach is what got me up it in the end.( i had no wheel spin though, i was in 4 low, foot off the clutch and no wheel movement just ended up with smoke from clutch and no drive)
lets get back to topic now as i have hijacked this one enough now with my wows :D
