*REVIEW THREAD* South Hampshire laning day, 5th Feb 2012

Postby Wilberforce on Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:07 pm

Well, we went out, came back, and got a li'l but muddy and stuff in between....

Thanks to Gary, Dan, Kylie & Phil for coming along, wouldn't have been much point otherwise. I hope you all had a good day, I certainly did. Amazing that you can forget just how many good lanes we have within a short drive of home.

I'll edit this into a better post once I've had a chance to sling some food down my neck

----- Munchies occur------

So, yes, suitably honoured to have Gary (Wideformat) and Kylie (CheekyChick) along for the day especially given the distance for her.
We gathered at the same point as for my last event, made sense really as it was a very similar route. Gary, Phil and Dan arriving first so we had a bit of a chinwag with an ambulance chappie in his Disco while Kylie exercised the women's prerogative to be fashionably late :butt:

Anyhow, we seemed to progress nicely through the day, enjoying the lanes and scenery although could have done better on the CB banter, guys
A nice long lane to start with, if a little scratchy in a couple of spots, then came unstuck at the same place as last time, with another tree fallen down alongside the golf course. Too big to shift though, so had to turn round rather than be able to move it. A couple more round the Romsey / Winchester area, then a rest and refreshment break at the services before getting started with the afternoon program, heading towards Basingstoke.

Again, some good lanes, although Hampshire County Council have as ever excelled themselves with their dislike of 4x4's. There are now some nice new "No motor vehicles between Nov & May" signs on a couple of patches of a lane, so new they're still shiny. And in true fashion, one lane had a sign at one end, and not the other (we came in from the unsigned end) and another simply had a patch right in the middle of it. I'd not mind, but all HCC's mapping shows them as normal BOAT's and there's not a mention of restrictions on their TRO pages

Rounded off the day with two final lanes that I did ages ago with RangaKoo, and then a trip to the fords at Odiham for some wading action. Only one minor navigational wibble right near the end as I lost count of road turnings and went down an access track rather than the lane I was aiming for, but I'm blaming that on the last minute change of plan
Unfortunately some slight collateral damage in the form of a couple of CB antenna mounts - mine and Gary's - from the overgrown foliage towards gthe end of the day, and those daft orange indicator repeaters - same reason.
Thanks to Dan for the loan of his spare magmount so I could keep up the comms for the remaining hour or so of the day.

I think a fair number of photos were taken throughout the day, and some nice videos of the fording runs, so hopefully you chaps will oblige and post them on PhotoBucket for us to see...
Hopefully see you all again soon, either for my next trip, or at the SE picnics.

In places, yes... Only slightly snowy though, which is disappointing, as I'd have liked more.

Ahh well.

Well, I had fun, yep
Next one ought to be the Alton - Petersfield area, so near your neck of the woods. There's a bucketload of lanes there, most of which I've done previously with the mad Australian.

Yeah, those that HCC doesn't reclassify the last 200yds of
I think they've done it to Water Lane, too. I'm gonnae take a trip to Winchester one Monday morning, and have a perusal of the definitive map.

Anyhow, it'd be grand to have you down this way again, although you better turn up in something that's got a VX badge on it :butt:

Meh, presume away. Especially if there's coffee and / or biscuits involved.

New shiny shiny stuff isn't so bad to be spending money on, mind.
