Hi all, new to this site and from what i've read so far i'm well impressed.
I have been looking for a 2.8tdi and have found one that I need your advice on, sorry if it brings up old threads but it seems to be a common fault.
It looks great and has had most of the service work done including cam belt and new exhaust, problem is it wont rev past 2000rpm, guy reacons problems started after he had the whole car steam cleaned.
He has already gone through the filter by cracking the bleed screw and priming, opening the filler cap etc. Seems to think now that the fuel line is letting in air??
Is this an expensive job to do or could I drop the tank and replace with high pressure hose(have loads at work).
The price of the car is related to it not running but I dont want to get stuck with huge problems that cost loads of money.

Hello mate ...Welcome ..

did you have the entire underside steam cleaned ...(why was it steam cleaned in the first place ...whats it hiding)...

a common place for fuel lines going is where they go up over the rear axle (where all the poo gets)..altho i fail to see why that would be limiting the revs..
have you had the egr valves off and cleaned out
did the car get new filters (fuel and air)

He said the filters have been changed but dont think he will have touched the valves.
the car fires up straight away but just wont rev, if you prime the pump while the engine is running it will rev all the way but as soon as it drops below 2000 it wont rev again.
I dont want to buy the car if it's going to need a new fuel pump but i dont want to miss out if it's something simple.

think you need to ask yourself a couple of serious questions????

do you know why it was steam cleaned.......(is it hiding sommat sinister)

do you need the car for work ...(is it going to be a daily ride,family car)

Thanks Red for tour comments, to answer I dont think he is trying to hide anything and couldnt see any signs under the car or the bonnet of anything leaking. The rest of the car did look really tidy and at tick over sounded ok.
As for usage I need something that can tow my van and trailer, I am renovating a house with constant trips to builders yards etc.
A big enough boot for the dog and crate for when he gets muddy and plenty of room for fishing tackle (my mpv doesn't like the tracks down to the rivers I fish).
Occasional trips round the fields with a friend who is a game keeper.
Not forgetting economy.
Of all the cars I have owned my two favourite have been a 2.8 isuzu and a 2.3 frontera which I had to let go when the gearbox packed up, hence I'm looking for the best of both with the 2.8 frontera.
If this car was running I wouldn't hesitate at buying it and I'm not afraid of doing the work just dont want to be stung.
