Hello all,

I'm Paul and ive just bought my first 4x4, a 1999 Frontera 2.2dti, its completely bog standard and want to make it a bit more capable off road (I know I shouldnt ask here but its late and i dont want to make another thread for such a stupid question is a 2" lift and some bigger tyres the best start?).

Have been browsing this site the past couple of nights and its been a huge help in making me regret my decision before ive had any problems (half expecting my fuel pump to give up or vac pipe problems next time i get in it).

Had a lowered MX5 before hand which didnt cope well with country lanes (bracing myself for impact on potholes daily and new suspension every year ) so thought I'd get something that can handle them, took it for a trundle down a snowy/icy single track road tonight (potholes and hills galore) and it did the job with no problems.

Hi Paul, and welcome to the funny farm

The mods you mention are quite simple to do and can be quite cheap too. Have a trawl of the tyres and modifications sections for inspiration - don't be afraid to ask if you're not sure or the search is playing silly sods.

If you're worried about the vac pipes just buy a length, different colour to standard perhaps, and replace one by one until they're all done.
Fuel pump is best served by never letting the truck run out of fuel so keep an eye on the gauge when playing.

Thank you 4x4bobby, I'm a bit of an amateur mechanic (very amateur tbh) and learn about my cars from a haynes manual but from what i gather they are non existent for these?

This weekend ill change engine oil and filters (air, oil and fuel) and vac pipes, will take it to a garage for diffs, never touched one before and i dont wanna cock it up, especially with it getting dark early(ish).

A local meet would be nice, give me a chance to see what others have done to theirs, give me an opportunity to ask more stupid questions and you the opportunity to slap me if they are too stupid.
