Hi, my names mark im 28 and live in edwinstowe in nottinghamshire. Im in the process looking for a frontera for green laneing little bit of off roading but more road use.As im new to fronteras and dont know much about them i would like some questions answered if thats possible
Ok,ive been looking at the two diesel engine types (2.2dti or 2.8td) which one is the best one to go for? I want something to be reliable and not to bad on fuel as my mitsubishi pajero was a joke in relibility and fuel consumption was doing about 18 to the gallon lol.
Basically which is the best frontera to go for as i suppose in every car there is good and bad points and weeknesses

Hi and welcome, you are looking at two very different beasts

The 2.8tdi is unrefined and agricultural but as reliable as anything, in fact its most likely the most reliable engine VX put into the Frontera.
The lump it very easy to work on (and thats not often) its getting on a bit now at 15 years but still brilliant performance from what is a 40 year old design of engine, you will find the ancillaries may need replacing with age like alternator and starter but the main lump if looked after with regular oil and filter changes will be going well when the rest of the car has fell to bits.
You should get between 25 to 32 miles to the gallon and very easy to modify.

The 2.2dti is a more refined engine and a tad more power down and newer, but its the same as most modern engines and has the ECU controlling most things this can make fault finding a bit of a problem occasionally.
The 2.2dti being the B series is a little more difficult to modify for off roading due to the fuel tank in an awkward position and from standard its a bit lower in ground height, this is because its designed more road bia, so its a toss up with your needs.

Hi, and thank you for the reply. As regards the money side of things i think it will be more the older frontera with the 2.8 as the dti's seem to be fetching a fair bit of money.nice to know the older engine is still a beast.
Is anyone on here selling a good 2.8???????????

Welcome to the Mad House. With regards to your question - both Engines are fine. The 2.8Tdi has a bit more talk but I've seen guys with 2.2dTi doing the same job. Had a 2.2dTi myself and can only say that it was a very good engine.

Either way, both styles offer great fun on or off road. It's more a question of how much you want to spend and finding a good car.
