Newbie unsure of which to go for!

Hi guys

My names Jim, I am currently looking to buy a frontera for a work horse , the car would be used to drive across open fields in all types of weather, nothing to drastic but a 4x4 is needed none the less

I have been looking at cars up to £1000 and am unsure which engine to go for, a lot of my friends are vauxhall nuts and have said the 2.0 8v engine is a great one and it shouldnt give many problems, however i have no info on the diesels, could any one point me in the right direction???

I have driven a 2.5TD Vauxhall Brava which was painfully slow, i take it that its the same engine in the Fronteras???? as if this is the case i may go for the petrol engines

Heres a pic of my current car which will go into storage while im working this year, as you can see shes a little low to drive across fields lol let alone the fuel consumtion !!

When you say you need to drive accrues fields, can we ask why (the answer might enlighten us and assist in determining the better Frontera for the job)

The 2.0 8v Sports (only available in SWB) are excellent little trucks, but do give a "choppy" ride. The engines seem to run on and on and can take some abuse, although they can run hot which can be a concern. Spares are readily available.

The diesels offer an easier drive due to less gear changes and the torque of the engines and will haul heavy loads with little effort.

For you budget, most of the A Series should be available to you (pre 1998)
