Ive been looking for green lanes in south yorkshire, but with no success - probably because s yorks is just one huge conurbation.

I think you’ll find it using this map access along the route labelled Smith’s Lane.

I have no idea about rights of way as I haven’t been up there for years and years. (school field trip about 25 years ago). However if my memory serves me correctly the best way to access is to drive from York to Pickering, then up to the village of Cropton.

Once in the village centre drive North (possibly following signs for Cropton Forest Drive), and at some point there is a junction where the Forest Drive starts on the right. DON’T GO THIS WAY. Go straight on, you should now be on unmade tracks.

The Roman Road isn’t really a Roman Road as you might’ve learnt about in school, it is just a few stretches of road that were built as some sort of Roman Road building Apprentice type thing, and can be found just off the track across the valley from the Westerdale Hall Youth Hostel.

I have no idea about access and rights of way, I know when I was last up there we were on bicycles, and the route we followed was very close to the path of the Lyke Wake Walk, so there will be quite a few walkers about the place.

Hope this is of some help.

the only thing i dont get is the "legallity" . now recently i was driving a green lane on the moors , shown as a lane on the wayfarer site, it had tyre tracks as well, but when i stopped off for a cig break i was accosted by walkers telling me i wasnt allowed down the lane in a 4x4, bearing in mind there was no signage showing prohibition signs, i nearly had some trouble when one went to photograph my car, but honestly .... what gives ????bearing in mind i wasnt driving quickly and was on my own, and i was polite to them , at least until they became offensive...

the world is full of idiots who 'think' they know the law. Surely a half-decent come-back would have been to whip out your OS map and show them the BOAT marked on the map.

I'd have asked them to e-mail me a copy of the pic

looking at the landranger map, it looks like proper track open to 4x4, but it might be seasonal.
