Can anyone tell me what a RUPP isHi
On the link below http://vamp.idlers.org/~jaffa/hertfordshire.htm Bottom of page, what does RUPP mean and can I drive it ! Thanks !
As far as im aware all RUPP's have been downgraded to restricted byways by order of the Countryside and rights of way act which came into force in may last year In essence this means its illegal to drive motorised vechicles on them unless it is for access purposes.
Sorry to put a dampner on your find

almost correct Turbo, Rupps were really lost to us a few years back when Tim Stevens went to court over a rupp and lost the case, although most 4x4 owners carried on driving them as it wasn't really clear if there was a penalty or fine for doing so. Not something I would recommend as, like you say, since the rights of way act as its kinda made it final
Intresting cyb, i didnt know about the court case. Who took him to court? Local residents?

The one two of these that can be legally driven in so much as "green laning" goes are: UCR (or sometimes called ORPA's or White Roads) BYWAY (or BOAT's) That's what's left to us now. And as said on another post about this, the ORPA is shown as Green dots on the Explorer map, and Red dots on the Landranger map. BOAT's are shown as Green crosses on the Explorer and Red crosses on the Landranger. Hope it helps a little. www.4x4search.org - your 4x4 search engine. 100% human submitted and edited!
Thought I'd pop my 2 pence worth in this one as well. Section 59 of the PRA (Police Reform Act 2002) covers this one quite well. CLICKY
I've snipped a little bit of that out cos it was waaaaaaaaay too long!!! imagine having to remember all that crap! gawd. Quite sad really.. But I suppose it does keep some avid non complient type 4x4'ers in check.. the thought of losing your truck is a sobering one! Hope it helps.. If in doubt dont drive it, check with the local Rights of Way Officer

I don't know if it's just in hertfordshire but most of the BOATS are marked with a red arrow on a post, infact they go like this:
RED Arrow = Byway open to all traffic (BOAT) BLACK Arrow = RUPP BLUE Arrow = Public bridleway YELLOW Arrow = Public footpath As i found out today, most of the RUPP's have been gated but just far enough down the lane to make it a bitch to reverse out again Hope this helps ![]() SIZE DOES MATTER!! One other point worth making about RUPPs is this.
As already pointed out in this thread the Countryside & Rights of Way Act 2000 reclassified all remaining RUPPs as restricted Byways (although this didn't actually come into force until last year). Restricted Byways do not have rights for mechanically propelled vehicles. However this legislation also did something else. It ammended s34 of the Road Traffic Act 88 to include the new offence of "using a motor vehicle on a Restricted Byway without lawful authority"! So it's not just that you no longer have a specific right to use a RUPP (now Restricted Byway remember) but to do so is a specific criminal offence (and thats before you consider the implications of the Police Reform Act mentioned above). Its your choice of course but that might be something worth considering before you drive far enough down one to find out that it's got a gate! Cheers Richard
Point taken A lesson learned by someone too eager to get muddy...Sorry!! ![]() SIZE DOES MATTER!! MEMBER 1728 1996 2.8 SWB called VIPER Members Ride section for VIPER Comments on VIPER here GET YOUR CARTOON CAR HERE
