oh yes, and depending on how you like your 4x4 stuff they are far more fun than an off-road site.
you never know what you'll find on a lane and because of this its not a good idea to go alone.
If your into maps (like me) try hunting down the map room at you local town hall /county council and have a look at the definative maps for your area. These are marked up with local rights of way and if you buy a landranger map for your area you can mark them down then go looking :D

Signs? - Now that would be a great idea :)

Unfortunately most councils don’t like to sign up BOATS, UUCR’s etc and if they do they often disappear or are pulled off by ramblers, dog walkers etc. Worst still my own county (Lincolnshire) seems to have a habit of using the wrong signs such as bridleway when it’s a boat.
The only county I’ve ever really thought was good at signage was Wiltshire.

So how do you know? The only true way is to check the definitive map at your local CC. The Wayfinder site although very good is only as good as the information displayed, which unless regularly reviewed and updated can be wrong.

As Lawrence has pointed out in his guide it is up to you to make sure you know your rights of way.

You also need realise that there maybe no visible track there other than maybe a gate into a field.
Sometimes a right of way will cross a field leaving no indication where it starts or finishes, and this is why you need a map and some idea of how to read map references.

Green Lanes are fun to find and explore there are many easy ones but the seldom used /difficult to find ones are more fun. Think of it as an expedition into the unknown
Oh and make sure you're prepared for the unknown too. 8)

ive been on a few lanes today, which i never knew existed untill end of last week.

I went to the local book shop and bought some Landranger maps for my area, and between using them and way finder, ive passed quite a few hours this last week, and today. And the more i study the easier it is to read maps.

Much easier with sat nav, until your location appears in the middle of nowhere.

Even got lost today   Doubled back to a farm with map in hand to ask for directions.

Farmer was very friendly and helpfull, and pointed me on in the right direction..... Smiling when i said i was lost. (Even found me on the map too)

I think this is what it should be like
