Llanfyllin and Surrounds Laning Recce - 16/8/09

Postby Sir-Doris on Sun Aug 16, 2009 9:09 pm

Went for an impromptu laning recce for some new lanes with Alex and CheekyChick and discovered some absolute crackers. Started at about 11am and finished up about 6pm. Only managed to do just over half of the planned route due to a few low lying trees and tea stops ;-)

Piccies and review to follow.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

Oh yes Creakychick got stuck, but at least it was in ruts deep enough to lift her wheels off the floor

Was a cracker, we crossed a river a couple of streams, did a few lanes un driven by anyone for ages. Some we kinda had to fight our way into and out of.

Nice finds Doris.

Dont be mean, it's not the cars fault :P

It was a valid excuse for being stuck I reckon,

Was a fantastic day, AND extra bonus is that Harv is zonked, hasn't even eaten his tea, although that could be down to all the snacks that Spencer fed him

Thanks again guys, like you say Alex, especially to S-D

Right, As Alex said we crossed some nice fords, had some unexpected terrain and some lanes that hadnt been used by man nor beast in quite some time (Motocrossers dont count). We had the usual wildlife, pheasants, sheep (Drift ;-) ), and cows as well as a smattering of squirrels, buzzards, butterflies, mink and OAP's.
There were the usual few wrong turns and at one point having to do a 3 point turn in a river, well CC managed a 3 point turn, us lard asses made multiple point turns ;-)
Definitely not a day for shinies but none of the tracks were particularly difficult, just overgrown and AT tires would be more then adequate for the most part.
Yes, CC did get stuck but in all honesty they were SERIOUS ruts and I was dragging my diff. Not sure if Alex was or not but then he has bigger tires then me :-(
The last lane of the day had a fantastic and quite a wide river crossing with a nice sideslope just before entering the river and a steep exit on the far side.

There are more pics on my camera but Il have to wait until I get home to upload them.
Here are a few pics from the day, all good stuff an I hope they show you some of the challenges we had for the day.

Pics courtesy of Meryl ;-)

Phew... The proposed route was a shade under 40 miles, with walking tracks beforehand and the odd nuisance branch here and there and stopping to chat to a local resident to confirm right of way (he was a very pleasant chap who even said the track wasnt used enough :-) ) we only managed about 31 or 32 miles of it. The idea was we would end up at Lake Vyrnwy but Alex had to shoot off just after 6pm and CC was running low on fuel, coupled with the approaching cloud cover it seemed like a good time to head for home as the troops were starting to get hungry anyway.
With a slightly earlier start and another hour or so to play with and having driven the route once (well, most of it anyway) I reckon the complete route could be driven in a day.

Some more pics and a couple of vids:
