Different Quality Of Diesel Fuels

Postby Alpine_Skier_UK on Sun Feb 24, 2008 4:06 pm

This got mentioned before when there was talk of water in Tesco's Diesel....

Alpine_Skier_UK wrote:For years i always belived that brand loyalty did your engine the world of good. Probably came from parents who always used Esso. So for years i have used Esso too. In my van which i bought from new, i filled it everytime with Esso and for 80lts i always get 500miles +/-10miles. About 6 weeks ago i got offered a BP Fuel card, offering a discount on BP fuel of around 4-5 pence per litre. Not a bad saving so i tried it. First tank i got 480miles, and the second tank i got 450miles!!! At this point i thought that something was going wrong with the engine, but i got advised to try Shell Diesel Extra. This was 1.5 pence per litre cheaper than the Esso i had used for so long, and unbeliveably i got 540miles out of the first tank!!!! I am currently on the second full tank of Shell Diesel Extra and it is looking like i might get 560-580miles out of the same 80ltrs. So an extra 100+miles per tank and its cheaper too.... Win-Win!! :D :D :D :D

O hyeah, i do not work for, nor have shares in Shell!!!

Well as an update, my second tank of Shell Diesel Extra i got 555miles, and i am now on the third tank, and at 560 miles and still it keep going!!!

I knew that some supermarket fuels were possibly lower quality, but to find that theres such a vast difference between major brands, is amasing... Guess i am converted to Shell!!!!! With the price set to rocket, knocking a few pence per mile off always helps!!!

Has anyone else found something similar to this with other fuels??

I find I get marginally better mileage with 97ron petrol instead of 95ron. Engine feels smoother as well. But I dont think its worth the extra 5 to 10p per liter for the most part.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

After reading your origional post I used the last few vapours in the tank yesterday to find a shell station, filled her up and set the counter to zero.
I usually do about 200 miles per week so the longer it takes me to post again the better.
