WHATS THIS BIT hanging down at the rear Fronty B

Postby sare^baw's on Sun Feb 17, 2008 5:06 pm

was under nesth my new fronty B and there is this blackbox thing hanging down it seemed to be connected to some brake line unit at the rear but it does not have any fluid going thru it, it was tied dangling with thin rope so i removed it, can someone tell me what it is, im going to fix it back up maybe with tie wraps.

i have an lpg tank underslung at the rear so i thinking this has been removed to accomodate the tank but some shoddy git had not fitted it properly. All that connets to it is 1 tube without any hose clamps. The other 2 connections are as you see in the picture so im unsure if they are meant to be connected to anything.

you haven't got inflateable rear shockers have you?
That looks like an air receiver for blowing them up perhaps

yes its a petrol 3.2 , the brake valve unit thingy it joins to is at the rear passenger side its where the brake lines go to to left and right, they join a a t piece then a pipe goes up to join this unit. A spring thing is attached to some lever and its connected to the rear axle

one of the connectors on the plastic init say 'tank' and another saye 'purge'

That now sounds like the load sensing brake bias valve.

ah so why is one connector conneted to the brake bias valve that trugga has mentioned.

as you can hopefully see by the pics one o0f the tubes are blanked off so should this be connected to the fuel tank?

If I get chance I will have a look tomorrow to see what’s gos where.
Essentially this stops petrol vaporizing to atmosphere, (hydrocarbon emissions ) the fuel vapor travels to this unit and condenses and trickles back to the fuel tank

i still have not got any further with this, i have fixed it up with tie wraps behind the rear bumper and connected it to the brake valve but its not connected to the fuel tank so i assume the tube from the fuel tank is blanked off too.

whats confusing me is why is it connected to the brake bias valve ?

When you say its "connected" to the load valve, in what way is it connected?
Is it just one vacuum pipe connected to the bleed nipple? As if to keep it out of the way perhaps?
On most cars the Carbon canister (which this appears to be) is either under a front wing or under the bonnet.
One vent pipe runs from the tank up to it
One pipe connects (via a temp controlled valve) to the inlet manifold
One pipe is open (via a one-way valve) to atmosphere.
As the tank cant vent to atmosphere, the fumes are held in the cannister and burnt off by the engine from cold start, then the fumes are replaced via the one-way valve during normal running as required. At no time should the tank vent directly to atmosphere.
So you should have a blanked off pipe from the tank and one from the inlet manifold.......the brake valve is a red herring (well not really........really its a brake bias valve......well you know what I mean.......its not a fish and its not red......)
What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??

ok cheers for that explanation that explains things really well, where should the vapouriser be on the fronty B ?

i can take pics of the pipe that it is connected to unless i am mixed up, its best i take pics to let you see what im going on about.

will return with pics 8)
