Just Bought My first Frontera..Think ive been sold a Dog :-(

Postby Dalov on Sat Dec 08, 2007 4:31 pm

Ive just bought a M Reg 2.0i Sport 3dr after my previous car went bang last week, With Christmas around the corner and money being a bit tight, i saw the car advertised for £500 with Tax and MOT and thought "bargain".

I fear im wrong, there are a few faults and was hoping someone on here might have some tech knowledge and be able to point me in the right direction for repairs...like i said moneys tight with Christmas a couple of weeks away !

Anyway, the main problem

There is a quite loud noise coming from the rear that sounds possibly like brakes binding, ive seen elsewhere that this is a common fault ??? is it a simple repair ?

Another one, about a pound of Gun Gum fell off the back exsaust box a couple of days after getting it and it now sounds like a cheiftan tank, Is the back box seperate on these or do i need to get kwik fit to replace more ?

there now appears to be a knocking coming from the front offside wheel, possible bearing or suspension...is this a common fault ?

There are a number of little bits wrong like the intermittant wipers are eratic, the blades move up the screen 6" at a time then stop and then another 6" and stop and so on.

Apart from the above stuff its a pretty clean car for the year and well worth getting back to its former glory but im just concerned about the brake binding bit or is it something more terminal ? !!!

Thanks for any advice you can give

Hi mate,

Firstly welcome to FOG!

Sorry to hear about the problems you've got, firstly where abouts are you? (if you could add a county or something to your profile that'd be useful).

I'd suggest that the brakes probably just need to have new brake shoes or pads put in, you might need you drums or disks though if it's particularly bad, it'd be worthwhile pulling the wheels off to have a look.

Odds are you can get a new backbox fairly easily and have that installed, if they try to sell you more (unless its needed) tell them to get stuffed, they can weld a backbox on to the exhaust pipe, you don't need a whole new pipe unless it's stuffed.

Knocking in the front could be several things, a bit more info about it could be good, does it happen when driving, or when turning the steering? etc.
Could be brakes, but more likely the suspension in some form, could just be rubbers need replacing or new shockies.

Intermittent wipers is probably just a relay or similar, sounds more like the return system isn't working. It's probably more worthwhile to grab a second hand wiper motor and fit that instead, you should be able to grab one from a breakers fairly easily and for not much £. It's easier than stuffing about trying to fix return systems and stuff.

I'm sure none of it is terminal mate, it can all be fixed.

At the very worst the noises in the back *could* be the diff, but it's probably not likely.

Take a look here you might find something useful. There are some things that you might not have thought of.

It'd be worthwhile getting all the oil levels checked in the diffs and get the grease points greased...
Also change all the oils and filters, it'd probably be well worth while doing that.

Keep us up to date on what happens. And good luck.

Cheers,
Si

Firstly thanks for the welcome, it appears you have a good group of people on here after reading a lot of the help offered below.

I did put my County etc on the profile....Just happened to put it in the occupation box

Now ive found the site i will get a bit more proactive with the car rather than just walking in circles around it swearing a lot :D

I will post back when ive done some of your suggestions.

Thanks again

Ive had a few Head in Hands moments with this car, but all your positive answers have given me renewed hope...Thank you :)

Now all i have to do is find a local mechanic who is "Cheap" to do the bits and bobs in the next week ( we are hoping to use the car to go to London for Christmas !

Ive just remembered another very annoying thing, The Fuel filler.....the little silver flap down the tube is too far down for petrol pumps to reach and push back...So when filling the car i have 2 choices..1 Fill up 50p at a time with the pump going click every few seconds OR (my favored choice but embarrassing) 2...Take the aeriel off and poke it down the hole pushing the flap out of the way and fill the car as normal.

Is this a normal problem and does anyone know of a quick fix ?

Once again...Thankyou all very much for your positive words and good advise

Dale

Mate I also have an M reg sport
Am constantly finding minor things wrong but thats part of the fun

I took it to the local garage for a quick check over and was delighted when the mechanic said the underbelly was in Imaculate condition.
