WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK TODAY!Re: WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK TODAY!On the 2.8:
Got the started off, will clean it up and refit tomorrow. Then I'll do the same for the alternator. Then once its all running and producing its own power I'll set about removing the birds nest, fit my boost gauge and see what's going on with the turbo. ![]() My 2.8 shorty - now sold, and comments here My old dti - now sold "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "WOW --- What a Ride!" Re: WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR TRUCK TODAY!Started to make a wee bit of smoke on startup.... Not normal.
Got home and dug out the old very knacked turbo with a view on doing something temp with it. Thinking about doing a temp conversion form a turbo 2.8 to a normal asperated 2.8 while I hunt down a s/h turbo or bite the bullet and get a new one! Tore it apart and got the spindle out and lots of bent bearing bits from when it died last year have now blocked up the spindle holes (one in the exhaust chamber and one in the air chamber) with a nut and bolt at each end with the aim of keeping the oil where it should be. Next job is to split the one on the car, removing the turbo bit while leaving the exhaust end in place on the pipe and manifold. I will then put the bodged bit on re-connect the pipes etc and start it up. Theory has it, It should then run with out the smoke... I think Now question is, by ripping out the guts of the turbo how much pressure am I going to loose in the oil system or will it not notice? There should be some back pressure created due to the very small hole (and it is VERY small) that the oil goes through in the casing but the other parts of the turbo that would further reduce flow (spindle, bearings and a machined piece that seems to be used to direct oil flow*) have been removed. * Point to note, this part, which has the spindle running through it contains a spring which acts on the bearings located on the spindle seemingly to keep them in position and correctly tensioned. If the part is rotated more than 5 degrees will completly block all oil flow. This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been
