you would need an XP CD key and CD.
put CD in the CD drive then when it says press any key to boot from CD/DVD press the spacebar then follow on screen stuff installing xp

hi
thanks for your reply
i dont know much about operating systems or computers for that matter
i took the lap top round to the father in law but all he got when he inserted the XP disc was a message saying that the system had been shut down because of corrution
he then told me if i didnt have the back up discs from when it was cleared then who ever cleared it had f***ked it up and it was useless
my son says he could probably install something but he lives in manchester and i would have to take it up to him obviously for him to have a look
thats why any info is appreciated
thanks gary

Sounds like the operating system wasn't completely removed and it would need the hard drive formatting and a fresh OS install. If it has the Vista code on a label underneath, then you could use this to install vista, but not xp.
Or you could always download and install ubuntu

Fear not, once you get a vista disc in the drive it's a reasonably straightforward process involving a few instructions/inputs and a lot of waiting around.

Unfortunately it is a sony, so the easiest way to get Vista back onto it would be to get some Sony restore discs (only available from Sony or if you talk really really nicely to your local stockists they may have some). In order to do a clean install with a standad vista disc you would need to remove all the partitions off the hard drive and crae new ones, then have a CD key that is not the one on the bottom of the machine as that will only allow you to validate an install from a Sony image.

Sony may well try and charge you for a set of installation disks, sorry, it is the price you pay for an OEM installation.
