the notebook works with my usb pen  getting nothing at all from the cd rom  its spinning up but nothing

So we know that the USB socket works then. Did the disk drive come with an auxillary power supply or USB cable only ? IS there a socket for one if it didn't ?

came with usb plug only  has got another hole in the back of the cd rom which must be for power it says it does not need power supply to use it

It wouldn't be there if it wasnt needed Some laptops struggle to deliver enough power hence the auxiliary power socket, I would imagine that is your problem. When you plug it in and then click on Computer is the drive listed in there ?

If you have another laptop or desktop at home and you plug the drive into that what happens ?

Si can i call you now about memory map  Just in the middle of transferring it by usb stick but its taking some time. Just need to no how to install properly

Ive got a halfords inverter 12v to 230, its been used once to run a laptop and just sits in the back of my car, just a few scratches on it. Also has all the safety cut off and low battery thing going on. I will bring it tomorrow if you want to make my an offer
