overheating problems

Hi I have recently bought my second Frontera the problem I have is overheating, its a bit strange really sometimes its ok but when you start to go uphill the temp' starts to rise I have replaced the thermostat which didn't help when I pull over to let the engine cool down the center part of the rad is cold I took the rad off to replace it but when I put boiling water into it from the kettle the rad gets hot all over if any one as any idea's that would be great cheers Geoff I forgot to say the frontera is a 3.2 v6 03 model

Check the fan is working as it should.
Cold it should turn easy by hand.
When hot it should be very stiff or not turn by hand.

Also worth checking the water pump? If it has plastic impellers then they can break off and cause poor flow

Worth considering an air lock?
I know the 2.0 engines are horrendous to get all the bubbles out....1st and 2nd attempts.
