Relocate fuel tank mot question

Postby lee771 on Fri Jan 06, 2017 7:25 pm

Hi guys

Just wanted to tap in to your combined wealth of knowledge

If I turn my swb A in to a pick up and move the petrol tank in to the bed how would I stand with mot?

Can I just put the tank in the back ratchet strap it down feed the fuel line though the floor?

If I use Wood to close the cab off is this sufficient to separate the fuel tank and driver?

You might well have to ask your tester. I think it's possible to get away with a surprising amount of alterations as long as they conform to the mot but you might want to ask your insurers as well to see if it's ok with them. I have seen pickups on eBay with wooden backs.

It isn't the MoT I would worry about .. it is the DVSA.

I would say that you have to ensure it is properly secure with steel straps or bolted. Ratchet straps will get loose over time and stretch etc. Also the risk of the ratchet popping open. All the MOT test will be looking for is leaks and if the tank is securely mounted.

Now the DVSA will be a lot different. They will be looking at the system in case of accident, people dropping stuff into the bed, the fuel lines protected etc etc. I think you will find that you will have to ensure the tank is firewalled (i.e. protected within a steel box, hoses need to be braided and correct fittings etc. I would even say that the tank would have to be a steel one to protect it from being punctured so the OEM plastic one is out of the question There is talk that MSA regulations are the ones to follow.

If you just ratchet strap the tank in the bed and jubilee clip flexible hose then you will get slapped.

Personally I don't see why you would want to do it. It is possible, but the hassle isn't worth it.

What would the gain be by moving the tank into the truck bed, have you thought about altering the tank cradle so it sits higher up by a few inches.....
