I think its just a non surfaced road, Carl, ie a track.

How is it marked on the OS map?

They are ORPAs : Other Route with Public Access.

Most of the lanes we drove in North Wales were the same

There are also a few BOATs off the A381 :D

bloomin heck.....

I've never seen that sign before anywhere

but basically an unmetal road is any track that does not have an tarmac suface - and I believe you should check before driving in the past some have been (wrongly) classed as bridleways.

Basically the only definitive way to find out is to ask the council ROW officer.

Having said that, i do drive some of my local ORPA's and haven't been challenged by anyone, yet

you do not need land owners permission, a road is a road but you really need to make sure its not been re-classified, just because a map shows you its a boat don't mean it is. And unfortunately its up to you to make sure you have legal access

Quite a good site
http://gis.devon.gov.uk/basedata/viewer ... e=footpath

Unmettalled roads are unsurfaced roads. They have the same laws as a normal road.

Did you find the one opposite red post garage with the over hanging tree and the little ford at the bottom?
