Security wheel nuts

Postby Hovells on Sun Oct 16, 2016 12:34 pm

Hello all,
My blue Frontera has developed a slow puncture. Since it's still sitting around waiting for a new engine i can't get it anywhere to inflate the tyre again.
I was going to take the wheel and replace it with the spare but I noticed I have these special nuts on them.
I've looked through all my breakdown gear and can't find the correct key.
It's '97 swb, does anyone know what type of socket I need for this?
As a heads up this Frontera might possibly be up for sale for parts or restoration.

Not had one like that before. Doesn't look like enough room to use a gator grip socket.

Gregster might have one. I had one front wheel which went down each week and I used one of the plug in to the cigarette lighter pumps all the time. Subsequently I have got a new tyre on that rim ( as part of its new mot ) as it still went down in spite of a friend patching the inside where it was leaking.

This method works, I used it last night to remove 4 locking wheelnuts ( not on a Fronty ) check size but 19mm may be OK still..

I think cheaper sockets may split, goto Halfords and buy a 1/2drive Long 19mm socket from the "Professional Range". Will cost about £7

Hold over the nut and use the lump hammer to knock the socket over the wheel nut.. You dont want to bury the socket too deep or you wont be able to get the wheelnut out when your done.. so bash it on and test with ratchet or breaker bar, if it comes off just repeat and do a bit more hammering this time. When its about right you can undo the nut then use the lump hammer to hit the socket sideways from several angles to remove from the nut then undo by hand.

I've used the above method before and it worked well. Worst ones I had were the ones with spinning outer colar on.

I'm going to be using this method on a 2002 Corsa sometime, if the previous owner has not got the key, on all 4 nuts/bolts.
