front driveshaft gaiter

Postby jimdawson50 on Thu Jun 16, 2016 12:18 pm

I need to replace both outer gaiters on my series b. There'stalk about a) fitting split gaiters or b) fitting gaiters using a cone.
To do the job per the Haynes manual (series a) apparently takes about three hours so anything faster would be a help. The general feeling about the split gaiters is that they aren't up to the job. How does one fit the gaiter using a cone? HELP!!!

If you could fill your profile in, it will help people to help you

The process on a B series is somewhat different, as there are no Free wheel hubs to disassemble.

Firstly, stay away from the split boots. They're OK for quick repairs on street cars, but aren't up to the punishment a 4x4 can go through.

Most of the time taken in doing the CV gaiters is taken up by striping & rebuilding the hub, and you'd still have to do this, whether you use a cone or strip the CV to put a boot on the traditional way.

IIRC, you can only use certain boots with a CV cone, as you're relying on the rubber being able to stretch, and to be honest, I've had limited success with the stretch gaiters.

Have a watch HERE for a CV cone tutorial

I'd go for the split ones. I use them on both of mine and have had no problems at all which is surprising considering the life that Truck gets.

Just make sure that you follow the instructions and keep everything clean, especially the glued joint.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

If the outers have gone the others aren't far behind. Get a set from Milners then set a side a day to do them. As already said the hardest part is is striping the hub off then getting the upright out of the way. That done you remove the clamping band from the large diameter end of the inner boot, ease the boot back, tease the wire clip out of the inner cup and the shaft comes away complete with the inner CV guts. Remove the circlip on the shaft the keeps the inner CV guts in place the slide the guts off. Remove the inner boot, clean the shaft, release the outer boot clips and slide it off. And as the book says "assemble in reverse order".

Go on, do it. Show your truck some love!! :)

Kind regards

Stuart

PS. you don't need to split the bottom ball joint, just take out the 4 nuts and bolts that hold it to the wishbone.
Remember, keep the greasy side down!
