aerial

Postby jmc on Thu Mar 17, 2016 9:54 pm

Hi all,
I find myself often carrying things on the roof. Each time I do I am concious of being careful not to snap the aerial.
Is it possible to take it off and run a wire inside the roof lining which would still work as an aerial?
Any thoughts anyone?

An aerial or wire hidden in the roof lining wouldn't work well, if at all, as the car body works a lot like a Faraday cage.

You could install something like THIS at the top of the windscreen, but internal aerials never work as well as external ones.

Thanks very much for the comments.I had to ask my son what a Faraday cage is  . The link to the ebay page was not available so I'll try again later. I did wonder about a sharks fin one ,it would still stick up but would be less worrying than the one on there at the moment. Iv'e noticed that the Touran we have dosen't seem to have an external aerial so might have a look at that later.

Tuoran has probably got the aerial embedded in one of the windows.
Remember, keep the greasy side down!

Hi,
there are some modern cars using the sidewindows as antenaa or the heating wires of the rear window.

The following shows a converion-kit for older cars https://www.luedeke-elektronic.de/products/KFZ-Zubehoer/Antennen-Zubehoer/Antennen/Heckscheibenantenne-Antenne-fuer-Heckscheibenheizung-inkl-Verstaer.html
A translating site might be useful.

To be honest, I am no car-hifi-freak. But the effect of this farraday-cage is not a total no-go. Unmarked police cars here decades ago had the aerial built in the fender so it was hidden. These were handmade and had been worth a fortune.
Kind regards,
Ian

Thanks fatba and jeoh. Haven't heard of either of those options, in the window or the fender. If its straightforward maybe I'll just try a bit of wire in the car to see. I've already had the lining out for months now as I need to fix the leak around the sunroof. Thanks for the link to the German I will need a translator I do know two Germans local to me.
