Wont start in cold weather =(

Postby Depressed on Fri Jan 08, 2016 1:51 pm

Hi im struggling to start my 2.2dti when the temperature drops below 8 degree's it will turn over and has lots of battery power and all the leak off pipes have been replaced for brand new ones and are clear enough for me to see theres fuel in the lines and all the injector seals have very recently been replaced and the egr valve and the maf sensor have also been replaced also the lower inlet manifold has been replaced i dont have this problem once the weather temperature is above 8 degree's i only seem to have it when its lower than 8 degree's im wondering if it could have anything to do with the outside temperature sensor ? all my fuel lines from the tank and upto the engine are new like i say it starts first turn of the key if the temperature is above 8 degree's but below 8 degree's then ive no chance ? i really am giving up hope on this vehicle now ive spent a fortune on it and i have to say its been the most unreliable 4x4 i have ever bought Please can anyone shed some light on what it could be
Many Thanks in advance for any replies or help given

Looks like I'm in trouble with the Mrs's again...
She asked me what I'd most like to do to her body...
Apparently "Identify it" is not the correct answer!

Thats a good point Robfog i did swap the big relay over from a known working vehicle but it was still the same and yes Martinkettering im now at the very same point where ive just about had enough of it i bought it hoping for it to be a reliable vehicle for the winter months but its been nothing but reliable so far ive replaced the Lower Inlet manifold and it was coughing blue smoke out at between 1500-2000 revs that cured that problem but id also had it in a diesel specialist and all they could say was to advise replacing the maf unit which i replaced for a new one and no change then i had it in eurodiesel in chorley and they said it was the lower inlet selanoid so they disabled that which did make it run ok but low on power (No smoke) so thats why i replaced the lower inlet in the end ive also changed the glow plugs and all the selanoids and had the fuel pump and all injectors tested and replaced the 1st injector and all the injector seals and "O" rings ive replaced all the vac pipes and all the fuel lines and put on a manual priming pump and this week just spent £146 having a new seal put into the rear axle so ive spent a fortune on it and ive now had enough and am seriously concidering getting rid

Time to get the multi-meter out and go hunt for either a poor earth or loss of voltage in the glow-plug circuit, especially at the glow plugs and the glow plug bus-bar then if nothing obvious change the temp sensor.

Other than the temp sensor from what you describe the fault most likely lies with the glow plugs. I assume:

You changed the originals with new ones of good quality, the correct length and current rating and not made by some rice growing Chinese person for ebay....

You tested the old ones with a multi-meter to determine the resistance and that they were actually f*****d and then tested the new ones with a multi-meter to determine that they were within the spec tolerances and not f****d.

There is a good LOW resistance earth path from the Cyl Head to the Block and then to the chassis earth point and battery Neg.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.
