What a week~! *sigh* >>> WIRING HELP NEEDED <<

Postby rangaKoo on Wed Feb 13, 2008 8:19 pm

Well this has been one hell of a week, or actually a fortnight.

On the day after my birthday I drove to Cornwall to drop off a gearbox for Trog (hope your truck is working alright for you now mate)

On the way back I seem to have stuffed my alternator as it suddenly stopped regulating and was putting out in excess of 15 volts.

Source a new alternator (well new second hand one) and it was sent down to me, arrived today (thanks Trugga).

When getting near to home I noticed a bit of a grinding sort of noise coming from the rear end of the truck.. but thought nothing of it.

The noise got worse, went to the mechanic and he said oh, that'll be the Universal Joint in the drive shaft (as it had some play in it), so £55 extra on my account at the mechanics for the part, plus fitting etc...

The noise didn't go away, and by now the groaning/grinding noise was HORRID, so this morning dropped the vehicle off to the mechanic to check out the rear wheel bearings/brakes and see what was up.

O/S rear wheel, brakes, etc all taken off...

Leakage from the seal to the drive half shaft...

Everything removed in order to take out the half shaft...

And no dice.

It won't come out and has broken up a slide hammer in the attempts to remove it.

Now my car is completely off the road until the half shaft can be removed to re-do the bearings!

I MAY have to get a new diff as it's possibly easier to do!

F.F.S. I need a holiday from this car!

What next?

Ok, finished my rant now.

All in all though, at a guess I don't think the bits which have to be replaced would have lasted much longer, but it would have been better if they'd lasted at least until pay day! I am FLAT BROKE.

Dammit!

Try opening options for a front and rear trooper axle or a set from a 2.8

Too much time/effort, I need this back on the road now... can't get to work & back at all, 7 miles each way... no public transport or anything.

I would need to do a lot to change everything over to 2.8 diffs. :(

I think your going to need a bloody big press to get the bearing out, should be info in the axles section.

The Haynes manual describes the rear half-shaft removal process on page 9-6 - reads easily enough.

Do you have a Haynes ? I'd offer to scan and email but my main PC is still out of action)

On a lighter note, did you do any vacuuming after opening the parcel ?

Ok...

Has anyone got a 2.0i SWB Rear DIFF?

Needs to be in good working order and preferably from a 1993/4 model (as I know that way it'll be the same ratio)

And the next BIG question is...

Can you deliver it to my mechanics???

It's needed somewhat urgently. (IE Thurs or Friday at the latest!)

The vehicle is currently a couple of miles out of Alton in Hampshire and I could meet you in Alton during the day and show you where to deliver it.

If you can help, please PM me asap for my mobile number.

Cheers,
Si

Si, to answer you PM question, I did look at the wiring to the alternastor but could not get too close due to not wanting to get my shirt sleeves dirty (office uniform).

There are three colured wires - can anyone else itentifiy which one connectes to which connector. I'll have another look on Friday when the office uniform is "casual".

Got another Diff now...

Thankfully I got someone to go pick it up for me, otherwise I would've been stuffed.

This is the back of my new Alternator (thanks to Trugga) it's from a 2.8 Frontera.

Image

This is the specs of the Alternator in case your wondering.

Image

Now what I need is for someone to look at the top picture, and hopefully to tell me what wires go on to what pin using the order they are in there.

LEFT

TOP RIGHT
BOTTOM RIGHT

If you can do that you'll be a leg end.. :D

Cos unfortunately my current alternator that's survived for 2 weeks since it first started playing up has today given up the ghost totally. I was running on battery alone and now it's down around 11v when idling and there is NO CHARGE going in to it.

As such, I MUST fit this new alternator tomorrow or I'll be stuffed.

Please help folks!

If you can decipher the sticker (bottom left, 2nd pic) as I think thats the pin layout (different orientation)

eg: Left= IG (Ingnition?)
Top Right=S (?)
Bottom Right=L (Battery live?)

Not much help but might be some?
If you're sat there thinking things just can't get any worse, just wait......

Bloody hell, the man is a genius!

I hadn't noticed it before... *doh!*

Now just need to know what the last little bits of those are, heheh
And hope I've got the wiring right in the car to start with.

Anyone able to confirm?
Cos I certainly don't want to blow up this alternator if I do something wrong!
