i have been wondering about lpg as an alternative cheaper fuel, im aware that its not practical to buy a lpg kit for my fronty but i have been looking into lpg today.
Searching ebay and autotrader for 'lpg' i find many jeep cherokee's and ford explorers turning up with lpg conversion and 4.0 engines. Under 2k as well.
are these jeeps any good on fuel with lpg or would you beunlikely to see 30mpg using lpg with these big trucks ?
just curious
EDIT - or would it be better buying a truck that runs on veg oil if i was wanting to save fuel costs ?

Not used lpg myself but have run a Jeep on a veg oil/diesel mixture fine which reduces the overall cost of the fuel. Converting ta diesel to pure veg oil costs nearly as much as converting a petrol to lpg if you are getting it retrofitted and you are unlikely to find many cars converted to veg oil.
Watch out for rust underneath the Jeep on the chassis, mine had perfect bodywork but was rusty in all the MOT places and I got rid. Cherokees dont have a spare wheel bay and it is mounted internally which meant the one lpg conversion I looked at had the wheel mounted externally on an outrigger and the tank, would you believe, mounted across the whole boot then boxed in. The bootspace afterwards was shamed by a fiesta so if I was you find out where the tank is before wasting time looking at it as I did. Some are mounted underneath which is fine if you arent planning on aff-raoding on any nasty tracks.
I think the mileage on gas is slightly less per litre on petrol it's just that lpg costs less, dunno if this is the same on all cars but it is what I learned whilst hunting for 4litre Jeep

yes thats about right, lower mpg, no boot space or no spare wheel after conversion.
Maybe the wrong place to mention it, but as woddwizzard will confirm, the majority of Toyota Surfs are being run on veg oil/diesel mix.
When we went out with them recently the smell was bad.....kept thinking the clutch was going......then realised it was like a mobile chippy van smell.
Apparantly veg oil is now around 40p per litre in the quantities they buy it, and most carry a 20ltr container with them for re-fills.
Downside (apart from the smell) is they often have fuel pump seal problems...which can be expensive to fix.
What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??

Now I have been running on LPG for 9 months or so I wouldn't go back to petrol only.
MPG is about 10% less, but at less than half the price you can't really complain.
Only drawback is the lack of boot space in the SWB but I will sort that with an underslung tank soon..........
You need to be doing 15000 miles a year to make it pay for itself though, otherwise stick to petrol.

cheers for the replies, at the moment i get 29-30 mpg on diesel 2.8tdi, i have just got a job 37 miles away so i would like something more economical, no point getting a 4.0 jeep or explorer if im still only going to get 30mpg on lpg, even if that is good for a beast like that.
i was reading on the surf forum and then a veg oil forum and it seems certain cars can run on straight veg oil svo, but it seems to be ones with a bosche pump, ie old peugots and citreons, some vehicles can run on a mix of diesel and svo.
If your car cant run on svo you can get a twin tank set up to run on oil and diesel but its 600 quid to get fitted.
so i may be more inclined to look for a vehicle that has lpg but running a 4.0 beast on lpg is not necessarily going to be more economical for me.
would be interesting to know the lpg running costs of the 4.0 jeeps and explorers, not even sure if they are worth the money.
i know lpg is only worth getting fitted if you do lots of miles but i intend to but a vehicle with it already fitted and i hope it wont cost lots more than the diesel equivilant.

My 2.2 LWB LPG is more economical to run than my 2.8 diesel LWB
20 mpg to the gallon at 38p per litre is easy worked out to over 40 mpg at petrol/diesel prices

if i could get 35mpg like so,e folk with a 2.8 it would not be so bad but 30mpg tops.
over 40mpg would be great, i wonder if it would be possible to remove an lpg system from an old fronty and dit fit it to my 2.8 or does it need a specialist ?

You insurance company will need to see an engineers certificate for the lpg.
My insurance didn`t , I told them I was fitting it myself and they said no problems, this is on my 2.2DTi by the way.
Insurance was Norwich union at the time.

Sure was, and new insurer(because of extra mods) Adrian Flux didn`t require certificate, so I`m more than happy .
